An Implanon (TM) is an extremely small device the size of a matchstick. It is inserted in your upper arm just under the skin and can stay there for a period of 3 years at a time. Once inserted, the Implanon releases a hormone called “progesterone” into the body. This acts as an effective contraception and can also be used to help with heavy or painful periods.
